It has been
happening before our eyes, these past few days: the transformation of Prince
Charles into the King. For seven decades, he has been a fixture in British
life: a person of varied interests preparing to one day become king. Now he
must reinvent himself into a 21st-century monarch at a time of swirling
independence and republican movements around the UK and the Commonwealth – and
deal with continuing dramas within his family.
