Suppliers of the finest Irish Poplin ties since 1820
In 1820
Richard Atkinson, the then Lord Mayor of Dublin, asked a group of weavers to
make their Irish poplin for his shop. By 1837, Mr. Atkinson's Irish poplin
fabric was so popular that Queen Victoria granted Atkinsons a Royal Warrant.
In the
early 1900s, Atkinsons moved away from ladies' fabrics towards the production
of Irish poplin for cravats and ties, which the shop had already been offering
customers for some years.
Today's
Atkinsons Royal Irish Poplin is a beautiful 50-50 blend of the finest silk and
Australian merino wool.
Richard Atkinson an Enthusiast and Innovator.
Irish poplin
Richard
Atkinson was the pioneer in the development of Irish Poplin. In 1820 he
converted a cottage industry into a factory base. This secured employment and
much improved living and working conditions. Selling through his shop in
College Green, Dublin he built a following for Atkinsons at home and abroad. He
was recognised as a generous philanthropist and funded a refuge for widows. He
served twice as Lord Mayor of Dublin and his portrait in full regalia hangs
proudly in the Atkinsons boardroom.
Royal Ties
Business
Pic 4Over time the popularity of hand-woven brocades resulted in the award of
Royal Warrants from Queen Victoria and other royal houses around Europe. With
the patronage of these royal houses Atkinsons became famous for
"Royal" Irish Poplin. Success was also enjoyed at trade events at
home and abroad where medals for quality were awarded for our Irish Poplin.
Atkinsons
Ties continues to appreciate royal connections, with our product seen worn from
time to time on public occasions.
Regimental Ties
Atkinsons
regimental ties represent the heart of our brand heritage. Irish Poplin ties
and silk ties in rich and distinctive stripe patterns remain a source of
interest and fascination to classic fashion enthusiasts.
The enormous
variety of school tie, college tie, and club tie colourings reflects the
importance we continue to attach to identity. Very often the choice of colour
within a regimental tie has an important historical significance.
To this day
regiments and clubs are just as conscious to continue their own historic
patterns, and Atkinsons ties is privileged to retain its connection to
manufacture ties, bows and cummerbunds for such clients.
Ties and Fashion Trends
Over the
decades in which neckwear has evolved, Atkinsons ties has reflected the fashion
mood while still retaining its famous handwriting. The tie collection evolved
to include neat motif designs and sophisticated printed patterns.
All of
these developments were influenced by memorable trends of the day. Tie widths
have narrowed to the sharp-looking "Skinny Tie" and then blossomed
into the wide "Kipper Tie" as fashion has dictated. Currently the
narrower sharp look is introducing a younger customer to stylish dressing.
Atkinsons
tie production offers shape and length to suit individual store and market
requests.
Our brand
aims to provide our customers with a personal and professional service
reflecting the quality and proud history of Atkinsons.
NEWS
Titanic Ties
We were recently tasked to develop a new silk tie as
part of the major Titanic Ship centenary commemoration. The neckties are based
on a registered tartan conceived to represent colours reflecting the Titanic's
short history.
While ultimately at the centre of a tragedy, this ship
represented a huge and impressive feat of engineering. It remains a source of
pride, and is going to have a permanent museum opening soon close to the dry
dock where it was built in Belfast.
